Job Summary:

Under the clinical direction of a Registered Nurse, performs nursing procedures such as taking temperatures, pulse and respiration in addition to resident care duties relating to feeding, personal hygiene and other activities of daily living that meets the needs and interests of residents.  May perform related clerical duties such as assembling and maintaining resident charts.

Qualifications:

Grade 10 plus graduation from a recognized Resident Care Attendant program or an equivalent of education, training, and experience.

Typical Duties:

1)      Provides personal care to residents, such as assisting with bathing, washing, bowel and bladder care, dressing and caring for teeth, hair, nails and skin.

2)      Transfers, positions, porters and ambulates residents utilizing mechanical aides as required.

3)      Ensures residents receive adequate nutrition according to individual care plans by feeding, distributing meal trays and nourishments, noting changes in appetites or food preferences, completing menu slips.

4)      Under the direction of the nurse, may administer suppositories/enemas and provides perineal/catheter care and topical medication including ointments and lotions, take and record vital signs (TPR) and obtain routine (urine, stool and sputum) specimens.

5)      Observes and reports changes in resident’s functional and cognitive behaviour to the nurse on duty.

6)      Assists with admissions, discharges and transfer of residents.  Charts information such as weight, pulse and respiration, temperature; attaches documents to charts such as laboratory and special examination reports after review by the Registered Nurse.

7)      Assists the Activity Workers in providing and assisting the resident with exercises, crafts and entertainment.

8)      Sorts residents’ personal laundry, maintains proper care and identification of residents clothing and personal effects.

9)      Reports unsafe and/or faulty equipment, unsafe working conditions to the Unit Manager.

10)  Makes residents beds, and obtains resident care supplies on a daily basis.

11)  Performs other related duties as necessary.
